July saw the Society make representations at the Howitt Close Public Inquiry. The Society objects to the developer Freshwater’s proposal to build seven additional flats in a mansard roof extension on the 1930s Art Deco block. We view this as harming the character of the Conservation Area. We have also been seeking greater recognition of the building’s architectural merit, applying to Historic England for a listing for the building.
A decision is due soon on whether the planning inspector agreed with Camden’s rejection of the proposal. The decision will mean Camden Council turns to a second application the developer has made, similar to the first in adding the additional floor to which the Society and others object. Camden paused consideration of this pending the inspector’s decision.
